Safe System of Work

If at any point whilst undertaking this task you experience any difficulties or are unsure, cease the task and inform your line manager immediately.

Only trained operatives are authorised to perform this task.

Correct PPE must be worn at all times.

All relevant checks are to be carried out and logged.

Purpose To ensure safe movement and operation of york roll cage used in the warehouse.
Scope

York roll cages are used for transporting goods, loose items and parcels during the performance of duties. The correct manual handling techniques must be used at all times when loading and unloading goods. There are handles and brakes at the back of the york roll cage. Care must be taken when approaching corners. The operator must always walk behind the york roll cage to ensure that user is in control of the roll cage.

Pre-use Check

These checks must be carried out before you start your task. The pre use checks themselves only take a matter of minutes to complete and by doing these checks we can reduce the risk of injury to yourself and others.

  1. Remove any debris such as string, shrink wrap etc. from the wheels.
  2. Wheels are free moving and clear of debris.
  3. Check if the brake is working by pushing the break handle down and up.
  4. If the equipment is defective it will need to be raised with you TM and removed from operation.

  • To prepare the Royal mail cage (Yorke), open the two sides so you can reach the yellow floor.
  • Lift the yellow floor vertically and lower towards yourself.

  • Ensure the yellow floor sits on the two metal steps located above the front wheels (shown in the picture).
  • Place the red cover inside the cage and stretch the sides over the cage.
  • Secure everything with the restraining straps, starting from the bottom and working up.

  • Once the goods have been loaded for transport (remember ground clearance)
  • Ensure that straps are fully secure to the top. In normal use push back brake up.
  • For safety each York cage should be moved separately pushing it in front and using yellow handles located on the back, you should not be pulling the load.
  • If it is necessary to manoeuvre a full yorke container and you are unable to see over the container, it will be necessary to proceed with care, moving slowly and checking round the sides of the container as you go

Please be aware of the space required for the turning circle of the pallet truck.

  • When loading or unloading you must ensure immediate that the area around is clear of personnel and handbrake applied.
  • Once the roll cage is no longer required you must ensure that it is stored in the designated area.
  • Roll cage should not be left anywhere that will impede the sites health and safety equipment (fire extinguisher, fire exits, pedestrian walkways etc.).
